Aliases: The Maw of Justice, Bogborn Sleuth, Cold-Blooded Truthseeker

His given name, Garrik Vessk, originates from his Lizardfolk ancestry, but most only know him by his infamous title—Dreadmaw—a name earned from his ruthless pursuit of criminals and the unflinching bite of justice.

Dreadmaw Crocodile is a towering, reptilian figure with deep emerald scales, jagged scars across his snout, and piercing golden eyes that seem to dissect every detail in his surroundings. His voice is a gravelly rumble, slow and deliberate, like the tide before a storm. Though he lacks traditional humanoid expressions, his sharp instincts and methodical nature make him an unmatched detective, feared and respected among those who deal in crime and corruption.

Once a feared swamp guardian, Dreadmaw left his tribe to pursue a higher calling: the hunt for truth. He now prowls the underbelly of society, unraveling conspiracies, solving murders, and exposing secrets no one else dares to touch. He has little patience for deception and has a simple philosophy—"The truth always surfaces, just like a body in the bog."

His keen reptilian senses allow him to pick up on the smallest disturbances—faint blood splatters, hidden footprints, and subtle shifts in tone. He’s a master of forensics, using a mix of alchemical analysis, divination magic, and sheer cold-blooded instinct to piece together the past.

Key Personality Traits:
  • Methodical & Patient – "The truth cannot be rushed."
  • Pragmatic & Relentless – Will pursue leads to the ends of the world, regardless of personal cost.
  • Dark Sense of Humor – Finds irony in the cruelest of cases.

Abilities & Features:

Cold-Blooded Logic: Dreadmaw processes crime scenes with an unnerving lack of emotion. He can recall details with near-perfect accuracy and rarely lets emotions cloud his judgment. When interrogating suspects, his Insight rolls have advantage if the target is attempting to lie.

Swamp Stalker: His reptilian ancestry gives him keen senses (advantage on Perception checks using smell or sight) and amphibious movement, allowing him to track and hunt criminals even in the most treacherous terrains.

Occult Forensics (Multiclass Feature: Divination Wizard): By using Divination Magic (such as Detect Magic, Identify, and Speak with Dead), Dreadmaw can reconstruct crime scenes by peering into the past. He can use Portent Dice to foresee critical moments during investigations, granting him the ability to manipulate fate at key points.

Grim Intimidation: Few can withstand the unblinking stare of a crocodilian investigator. Once per long rest, he can use Menacing Presence—forcing a creature to make a Wisdom Saving Throw (DC 8 + Proficiency + Intelligence modifier) or become Frightened for 1 minute.

Signature Equipment:
  • "The Maw" – A modified war pick resembling a crocodile’s tooth, used to break through locks, armor, and skulls.
  • Alchemist’s Kit – For analyzing poisons, blood samples, and magical residues at crime scenes.
  • Notebook of the Damned – A ledger where he records every case, often written in Draconic so only he can read it.

Backstory:

Born in the murky swamps of the Sunken Wastes, Garrik Vessk was raised in a world of primal law—where the strong survived, and the weak were merely prey. As a young hunter, he learned how to track movement through the marsh, reading the water like a book and deciphering patterns in the mud to catch his quarry before they ever knew he was near. But while his kin feasted on the flesh of their kills, Garrik craved something deeper—understanding.

Fascinated by the causes of death, the motives behind violence, and the secrets that corpses held, he left his tribe and traveled to the civilized world, where he trained under human and elven scholars in forensic science, alchemy, and even divination magic. Though he learned much, his cold-blooded logic and lack of emotional expression made him an outsider—feared by some, respected by few, and trusted by even fewer.

Now a renowned but grim investigator, Garrik operates where the law fails—hunting murderers, unraveling conspiracies, and exposing corruption in the deepest, darkest corners of society. Using his keen reptilian senses, alchemical expertise, and divination magic, he reconstructs crime scenes from the smallest details—a speck of blood, a faint scent in the wind, or the disturbed ripples of a swamp at night.

Despite his brutal efficiency, Dreadmaw is no executioner—he does not kill for vengeance, nor does he revel in punishment. Instead, he believes in one absolute truth: "The swamp does not lie. The truth always rises, like a body from the bog."
